Operation Discover

Operation Discover is a Tallahassee Rotary Club project that encourages our members and others to help young people in economically deprived areas of our city to discover a brighter future through one-on-one mentoring. This endeavor is being undertaken with the assistance and support of the Leon County Sheriff's Office, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leon County, the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend, Lively Tech. and Leon County Schools.

Feeding Children
Second Harvest of the Big Bend
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RCT) packs and distributes backpacks of food for nutritionally at-risk children of a Title I Elementary School in partnership with a local food bank. The club funds 55 children weekly and coordinates a monthly service event to pack the food, which includes Rotarians, spouses, children and grandchildren.

Reading Pals
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RCT) partners with the United Way's Reading Pals program to provide 32 reading mentors on a weekly basis for the school year to help school children improve reading scores to grade level by the third grade.

ECHO
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RTC) collects canned goods once a month for the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO), a faith based, human service agency providing essential goods and services to those in need who are Leon County residents or homeless. The club also scales back its usual lunch menu to soup and chili the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and gives the difference in cost saved to ECHO and the Southern Scholarship Foundation as a donation.

Re-Grassing of Haiti
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RCT) is initiating a project to plant deep-rooted perennial grasses to reduce soil erosion and alleviate the above-described problems in Haiti.
Soil erosion is a major problem in Haiti, mostly as a result of deforestation which results from harvesting charcoal. Widespread deforestation has made the land susceptible to torrential rains, deadly flooding and mudslides, and hurricanes. The soil washed away is deposited in the ocean, where it is not needed, affecting marine plants and animals. The topsoil lost results in reduced soil fertility, drastically reducing agriculture productivity.

Coins for Alzheimer's Research Trust (CART)
At each meeting, members are asked to place their coins and dollar bills into a blue bucket on the tables. One hundred percent of these contributions is used for cutting edge Alzeimer's research.

Salvation Army
Annually, the Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RCT) organizes teams of Rotarians to conduct Salvation Army bell ringing at locations across our area. The Red Kettle Campaign helps raise money for groceries and shelter for the local community.

Patriot Program
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RCT) fundraises through placing flags on lawns throughout the community on major holidays throughout the year. Funds support RCT service projects with a particular emphasis on Honor Flight, a program that flies veterans at no-cost to Washington, DC for the day to visit the monuments that epitomized their service to our country.

Toys for Tots
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RCT) coordinates with the local Toys for Tots organization to be a collection site for toys in December and invites Marines to pick up and receive donations.

We Care Network
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee (RCT) donates funding to a local non-profit that coordinates specialty medical and dental care each year to uninsured low-income adults in the community each year. Several Rotarian physicians are present or past donating medical providers to the program, the community's only option for low income uninsured adults.
